One of the most extraordinary aspects of Carmel Retreat is its location. In the heart of the beautiful Ramapo River Valley surrounded by forested hills, visitors might well imagine they are far away from "civilization."

But, just three miles south is the town of Oakland with supermarkets, video stores, pharmacies, fast food of all kinds and good restaurants. Four miles north is Route 17, one of New Jersey's busiest shopping thoroughfares. There is hardly a store, restaurant or service that one could name that doesn't have a site along Route 17. Several major shopping centers are less that a 20 minute drive.

One of the nations largest malls, the Palisades Mall in New York is 25 minutes from door to door. At the Palisades a massive, stadium seating Loew's Cineplex offers 15 feature films and there's an IMAX just a few hundred feet away.

The Mall features more that 150 stores. Of course, there's New York City, a 30-45 minute drive outside of rush hour. But, there is also the magnificent Hudson River Valley, Bear Mountain State Park, Harriman State Park and the Seven Lakes Drive, mansions, museums, and amusement parks. All are within easy driving distance.

Those wanting to stay a bit closer to our home at Carmel Retreat will find swimming at a supervised lake pool nested in the mountains, skiing or horseback riding , canoeing or hiking as inviting alternatives.
